What is a PRODUCT?

Washing machine is a product for a home appliance manufacturer

I was asked “What is a PRODUCT?”

Not so easy.

Wikipedia says: “In marketing, a product is an object, or system, or service made available for consumer use as of the consumer demand; it is anything that can be offered to a market to satisfy the desire or need of a customer. In retailing, products are often referred to as merchandise, and in manufacturing, products are bought as raw materials and then sold as finished goods. A service is also regarded as a type of product. […]”

ChatGPT says: “In the context of business and commerce, a product refers to any tangible item or intangible service that is offered for sale or exchange to fulfill the needs, wants, or desires of consumers. Products can take various forms, and they are the outcome of a manufacturing or production process. […]”

I like to explain it like this:

It’s the outcome of your work that customers or users are paying you for. It might be a deliverable or a service. It brings value to your customer.

My illustrative example:

What exactly it is depends on your business and strategy: for example, for a home appliance manufacturer a product might be a washing machine with all the hoses and connections required, as well as the documentation for installation and operation of the machine. Whereas for an office for technical documentation (who is hired by the home appliance manufacturer) the installation document might be the product: it’s the end outcome of their efforts, it gives value to their customer and they get paid for it.

How do you explain what a “product” is?
